Short Info: The spot where beachfront luxury in Rio all began, The Copacabana Palace is the place to splurge. True, things have gotten more crowded since this opulent vision first appeared on a lonely stretch of sand, but the 82-year-old Palace still maintains its Jazz Age charm. Taking full advantage, however, requires approaching things with Gatsbyesque confidence. Take, for example, the superior rooms and Avenida suites. Or rather, don’t take them. Though slightly cheaper they offer not a drop of ocean view. Deluxe rooms offer a partial ocean view but to get value for money at the Palace it’s really a case of go big or go home, and there’s nothing bigger than the penthouse suites.

Since it was inaugurated, the hotel has played an important role in the cultural and social life of the city. Its casino in the 30’s and 40’s was a world reference. VIP guests include everyone from Marlene Dietrich, Disney and Orson Wells to presidents and royalty (Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana to name a few). The pool and bar are a gathering place for Rio socialites. There’s also an exclusive tennis court and a small fitness center. Copa was purchased from the Guinle family by the Orient Express group, and the hotel has been fully renovated. New additions include a premium executive center, and a number of breath-taking penthouse units overlooking the beach.
